Antenatal Yoga

antenatal yoga

Pregnancy is a time of many changes – physically, mentally, emotionally and at a deeper level. Yoga helps support you through these changes and gives you time to nurture yourself. Antenatal yoga encourages flexibility in the hips and pelvis, strengthens the pelvic floor, eases your back and helps you support your changing posture. As well as this, expect to relax, release and enjoy yourself as you prepare for the birth. Dr Nicholson teaches the antenatal yoga; she has a Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology as well as being an experienced yoga teacher, so you can be sure of your needs being met in safety. You should have the consent of your midwife before enrolling. Antenatal Yoga is suitable after 15 weeks.

The specific needs of pregnancy mean that it is best taught in a small group or individually. Rather than teach a set class, we encourage you to get together with a few friends or acquaintances from your antenatal class, or your birth partner, and arrange your own small group or individual sessions at a time to suit you. Please contact the Centre if you would like to discuss this.

After the Birth, yoga can be a good way to help your body readjust. Yoga also provides some valuable time and space for the new mother to look after herself. Specific post natal yoga is suitable from 6 weeks after the birth, and a stage 1 class can be attended after 3 months.
